So that was my year. I’m sure I’ve missed out a million things, but this is the list of the top of my head.

Apparently they’ve decided to call next year 2009. I generally find that my years go good then bad, so if 2008 was amazing, 2009 could well be shite. I’ll make sure it’s not though.

Thanks to everyone who made my year :)

The Mighty Boosh is dead

I recently found out that I may be seeing The Mighty Boosh on tour yet again in the new year. Now, three years or so ago, I would have been mega excited! I only saw it last month but this wouldnt phase a 17 year old Alex, he would be jumping for joy. But I’m not. I fear to say I’ve fallen out of love with the Boosh somewhat.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still genuinely funny and will make me laugh out loud several times an episode. But I feel like they’re too up themselves now, old Noel and Julian. The third series was brilliant, but ask anyone what their favourite series is and they won’t say the third; I believe the third series was the beginning of the end. The characters and scenarios lacked something in comparison to series one and two.

I saw it live back in 200…6 i think it was, that’s between series 2 and 3, and it was brilliant. It was like an actual episode, but with room for Boosh banter and irreverentness, if that’s a word, and it was hilarious. I saw it again on 1st of november this year in an entirely different tour. It was still hugely entertaining, but I saw very little of the boosh which I loved. This live show was full of gimmicks from the show, to please the audience with stuff that’s familiar. The whole first half was just a rollcall of various characters blurting catchphrases and the second half, they nearly went the ‘boosh episode’ route of the first tour, but it never took off and they mostly played music. I watched as teenage girls dressed as Old Gregg danced and realised that the boosh needed to be killed.

Seriously, I think it needs to be done. Noel and Julian are two hugely talented and very funny individuals. They could easily break off from the boosh and create a new series. Whilst the boosh doesnt really have any boundaries, they could try something completely new and different and probably keep the same fanbase. I do not doubt their talent or potential at all, I just think they’re getting greedy now.

And I’m sure most people would agree actually. What started off as a humble stage show and evolved into a radio show and then a tv show has gone beyond too far. Go onto the website and there is a ridiculous amount of merchandise. A book was recently released, but from a flick through in waterstones, it looks like nothing new whatsoever and just a stocking filler really. The Mighty Boosh festival took place in July this year in Kent, which just seemed odd. I think it was just a normal festival, headlined by the Boosh band and festival goers were encouraged to dress as boosh characters. I dont care about a festival. I enjoyed the boosh as an awesome, innovative series, not a franchise.

Browsing play.com the other day, I discovered there were Boosh action figures about to be released. I was told yesterday that they were making a film called ‘The Bunny and the Bull’, an album is being recorded, Alice Cooper of all people has hinted at a collaboration, a fifth series (theyre skipping the fourth) is inevitably in production, a spin-off featuring a very minor character from series three is in the making. Julian and Noel are riding this gravy train all the way to money town.

On top of things, crimping has been over done and the comedy has been sucked out of it.

I hate to say it, but the boosh needs to be put down before it dies a painful death.

I'ma goin' home!

I just packed most of my stuff for my journey back to the midlands tomorrow. My room looks nice and tidy with less stuff in it.

Hrm, thinking about it, I must remember to take off my bedding and take it home for washing. Black sheets look cool, but I didn’t think it through. I drool a lot on my sleep, and on black sheets it leaves dodgy looking stains on my pillows. Ted asked if they were jizz stains, but I asked why on earth I would jizz on my own pillow. There’s also a stain down the side of the sheet that looks terribly like vomit. And the first time I noticed it was the morning after I vomited a lot (out of my window). However, there was no vomit on the floor, the stain didn’t smell and wasn’t wet or anything, so I stand by it not being vomit :)

There were too many bodily fluids in that paragraph.

Speaking of paragraphs, being at uni has made me very aware of my accent. I still don’t really think I have one, but being down south, if I ever pronounce anything with a hard ‘a’ (like ‘grass’ instead of ‘graass’, yeah?), I get criticised. By the way, the link here to the word paragraph was that I said it like a northener the other day and had fun poked at me! Anyway, I’ve come to notice that I often mix the two. One time I’ll say Bath then I’ll say Baaath the next time, then after that I might say a variation that seems to be both. It’s because I’m from the midlands, so I’m neutral, like Switzerland.

I managed to get all of my work done in the end. I cheated a bit with my poetry portfolio in that I used a poem I wrote ages ago because I had no inspiration to write a new one. I say it’s cheating, but I still wrote it, so it’s cool. My essays were a whole load of rubbish, but at least I got them done.

The past few days have been lovely. As my birthday is the same day as another Alex who I’m good friends with, we had an A-Party, where everyone had to dress as something beginning with A. I dressed as Alex and she dressed as me. Hannah came as the alphabet (it begins with A in two ways!), Emma came as an angel, Amy came as an ant, Mark came as a certain famous Adolf, Mike came as an arab and Sabi came as an albino squirrel. Many others were also present, but they didn’t make the effort.

It started off slow and I tried to get everyone going with some drinking games. They failed because there were too many people :( but after this, everything started to pick up. We had a mini rave in James’ room to christmas tunes, a mini rave in my room to Justice and Digitalism and Beck and then generally pissed about. I was standing on a chair, shouting at Mark about how Freddy Mercury was black and fell off, bruising my tailbone and cutting my finger. Amy fell in the mud outside and had to clean up. Alex smashed a whole bottle of Gordon’s gin (the brand, there was no-one called Gordon there). Generally, we had an awesome time and left the house in a mess :)

That’s about all I have in my brain for now.

An incomplete scrap of paper I found in my pocket just now...

…constraints placed upon us by the Master of Eliot,
…dwarves originally cast to play the dwarves are no longer
…have been found at a lower cost, although they
…taller than normal dwarves.

The poem I posted on Dec 11th...

Here it is again, after being translated into Japanese, and back to English again.

I give you my Engrish poem:

As for me the freezing and others which remembers that you sit down in the opposite direction in the coffee beverage and the banana which are done the muffin of Starbucks under empire state. It pointed to my camera with you who your surface the time I are hidden. As for us, have that itself that time it goes, but as for me you knew that you think that we want, with anything something my 逹 as for. We walked and as for a it was around that the day when it is not different and as for hundred degree my plastic soled shoes which I feel the thing tar macadam pavement which dissolves; Those shoes which cannot be amused under any condition were liked. As for us as for the tower which waited for our revolutions it rose. The sky your eye of rear of the sunglasses where those which are color are high opened and the skyline before us. All picture images of awe were looked, it reached to thing me where the tip becomes pointed and was related television program. Public finance area which the `on that patch exactly me of the grass which is called my hostel which is asked somewhere, saw poignancy. I took my camera, once more and several image I where a certain thing which I who most am captured saw is beautiful now possess those images of my wall.

DRUNK

I shouldn’t blog while I’m drunk. I’m bound to make errors in my grammar and punctuation, which is something I always jokingly take the piss out of other people for because ‘I’m an english student’. But that is somethign I’m quote proud of though, I guess. English always seems like quite a prestigious degree, but I don’t entirely know why. I’m not arrogant about it, but I like to mention it. In my opinion, any degree is worth a bit of a brag, it always seems to sound impressive to people who aren’t students that you’re studying for a degree at all.

Ugh. I don’t even know what I’m talking about anymore.

I went to the Venue tonight (my on-campus club). It was ‘Face, with special guests!’ Face is a night at the venue that play exactly my kind of music. Generally, they drop a bit of Justice, Digitalism, MIA, Hot Chip, MGMT etc. Apparently, 2 months ago, the ‘special guests’ were meant to be Justice. I LOVE Justice. They didn’t do it in the end, but for a couple of nights I thought they had actually played a set and I was gutted. But they didn’t in the end, but I wasn’t going to miss an awesome DJ set tonight, so I insisted we went along, even after James and Alex hadn’t been allowed in (because James pissed in the corner of the club on saturday and both of them were banned) I still went ahead. It was a rubbish night, the club was empty. Ted threw up and spilt my Dr Vodka. After my second Dr Vodka, I got some weird chest pains and left. I didn’t feel good at all, but after a bit of a walk, it went away.

Now, because I got interrupted by various things, such as chatting to Alex and James about the first few days of the year and an argument with Anna about who wears the trousers in our relationship (its me by the way), I’m more sober, and just plain tired now.

So I’m off to bed.

I've just realised...

…that I am going to be LOADED when I get back to uni. A combination of birthday, christmas, working over christmas and my student loan being about £300 more than my accommodation fees for the spring term means I will be shopping like there’s no tomorrow :D

I’ll blatantly blow it on useless stuff.

The work load for the end of term is quickly diminishing. I just finished my creative writing essay (which is why I am awake at 04:17), so I only need to write one more poem for my portfolio, do another essay and five grammar tests before tuesday. EASY.

Speaking of poetry, here’s a nice poem I wrote this week :) :

I remember sitting opposite you,

Over iced coffee drinks and banana

Muffins, in a Starbucks under the Empire State.

You’d hide your face when I

Pointed my camera at you. We didn’t

have anything going at that point, as such,

But I knew we both wanted something. We walked

Out and around- it must have been a

Hundred degrees that day and I felt

that my plastic soled shoes would melt

On the tarmac; you laughed- you never

liked those shoes. We waited our turn and

Ascended the tower. The sky was the colour

of your eyes behind those expensive sunglasses

and the skyline unfolded before us.

You gazed at all the iconic images in awe,

Pointed things out to me and related to

television shows. You asked where

my hostel was, ‘just over that patch

Of grass’ I said, and you looked in poignancy towards

The financial district. I took out my camera

Once more and captured some of the most

Beautiful images I had ever seen-

I have those pictures on my wall now.

I’m working so hard though, and it means I haven’t had a chance to watch Dark Knight since it plopped onto my doormat on tuesday :( We had a takeaway/movie night tonight, I suggested Dark Knight, but it lost out by a fraction to Little Miss Sunshine. Not the end of the world though, because Little Miss Sunshine is an awesome film which I hadn’t watched in a year or so. Some trivia to like the two films- Steve Carell auditioned for the part of the Joker. Imagine if that had happened. I love Steve Carell to bits, but I think Heath Ledger was perfect in the role and I don’t know if I’d have been able to take Carell seriously.

I can’t wait to get back to Blockbusters next week. There’s so many films I’ve missed, not having my rentals. Plus, game and retail dvd discounts always rule.

I read on bbc news yesterday about a Chinese woman whose boyfriend kissed her so hard, her eardrums fell out. I cannot even begin to understand this. What constitutes kissing someone really hard?! Apparently it was something to do with air pressure in the mouth, so maybe he sucked too hard. But also, how do your ear drums fall out?! Crazy chinese.

I’m done for the night.

Work never happens the way you want it to

I fully intended to do lots of work today. I have 2 essays, a portfolio and a bunch of web quizzes to do before the 19th, but I wanted to get them done this week, so as to be able to chill out in the lead up to christmas. Last night, I sat down and wrote out a timetable for the week, giving myself plenty of time to relax as long as plenty of work got done. For example, today should have gone like this:

Seminar till 11, but allow time to get home and relax and warm up.

Start work at 12, work till 4 with a ten minute break each hour.

Chill out 4-8 (I realised that we had a house viewing in this time)

8-12, more work.

Instead, it went like this:

Seminar finished at 10:30, I picked up some work from the English office and got home at 11.

Started work at 12. Worked solidly (and I’m very proud of this bit) till 1:30.

Felt very tired. Slept till 4.

Woke up, had some food, watched some IT crowd.

House viewing. Then discussion about house viewing. Then signing up for house. Then scoffing Quality street from landlord.

By this point, it’s 10 or so.

Wrote a plan for my poetry essay, then did nothing really.

So out of the intended 8 hours of work, I probably did about 2. Sigh.

Well tomorrow’s another day, and I’ve only given myself about 3 hours work, so I might put in some overtime to make up for todays rubbishness. And then it’s wednesday, and that’s my free day, so I could do some serious workage then.

My Batman DVD failed to arrive in the post this morning. This displeases me, especially after the gold coin debacle of friday- Royal Mail are dropping in my opinions.

I might go and write an introduction to my essay now, to redeem myself a little.

I say might…

Stuff and Ting

What HAVE I been up to?

Well, yesterday (as in thursday, even though it’s technically saturday now), I had my usual lunch with Freya at 12 and then our lecture at 1. The lecturer was italian and looked about 12, but he was quite quirky and, according to my housemate, Lisa, all the ladies were swooning for him. Afterwards, Freya and I ventured to Vybarr’s office. Vybarrrrrrr is our seminar leader for Romanticism and he’s a bit of a genius. He handed back our essays and we were pretty pleased to find marks in the 60s, when I was genuinely expecting around the 40s.

I trundled home happily, feeling like all was good in the world and decided to celebrate my good mood with a Wispa and a Dr Pepper. I then proceeded to waste the rest of the day in my room :)

I found some lovely rapidshare links for Time Trumpet, a show written by Armando Iannucci broadcast in 2006 but not yet seen the light of day in DVD form, although I think it’s out in the next few months. It’s basically, for those who haven’t seen it, like those old ‘I love the 80’s’ shows that BBC2 did a few years back, but it’s set in the year 2031, so it looks back on the years 2006-2031 (bearing in mind that 2007-8 hadnt happened when it was broadcast), and uses this to be very silly. For example, the cultural commentators (who include Richard Aoyade, Matt Holness and Stewart Lee) recall when Tescos invaded Denmark in 2013, when Tony Blair went insane and started seeing ghosts and when the monarchy were voted out in a referendum and all royal palaces kept to preserve ‘Diana’s memory’. Genius stuff.

In the evening, I went over to Amy’s. Amy is my coursemate, who I often hang out with in my poetry lectures. We found out that we’re into exactly the same kind of comedy and have a mutual love of Simon Pegg, Darkplace and other stuff. I showed her ‘Look Around You’, because I was quite appalled that she’d never heard of it. She loved it, unsurprisingly. I think we should be a writing duo. You always hear of successful writers who met at uni and wrote something awesome.

Today, I woke up quite late, but just before the post arrived. An envelope arrived for me. It had a slight tear in the side, but I thought nothing of it. It was a christmas card from Anna :) She had taken a nice photo of us from october and turned us into Santa and Mrs Clause. Later, she ssaid she was annoyed for not thanking her for the gold coin in the card. There hadn’t been a gold coin! Someone must have nicked it, which is why there was a tear in the sode! Grrr bastards!

Speaking of Anna, I had a strange dream last night. I dreamt Anna and I were in some exotic country. I thought we were on holiday, but in hindsight, I think we were living there because we were shown around this amazing house overlooking the sea and I think it’s how our house will be in the future :) But anyway, on our first night in this amazing house (with glass walls, so we had a constantly amazing view), we went to sleep in our gigantic bed. Hours later, I was awoken by someone coming into our room. It was Robert Downey Jr. I was shocked to see him, and frankly quite in awe. He whispered, so as to not awake Anna, and asked if he could have sex with this woman he just picked up. Confused, I agreed and they both got into my bed and had sex for a long time. Anna slept, blissfully unaware, while I watched because I couldnt sleep with Robert Downey Jr practically having sex on top of me (not WITH me). He finished off and left the room, but the woman stayed and fell asleep next to me. Minutes later, Anna woke up and saw the woman and, naturally asked what the fuck I was doing. I tried to explain about Robert Downey Jr., but of course she didn’t believe me.

We went out tonight, to Eliot college for a massive party. It was alright, except the DJ was shit. He honestly played everything you’d expect of a school disco- Mambo number 5, Sweet like Chocolate and about five 5ive songs. As in, five songs by the band 5ive. Needless to say, we got bored after a while and left. Girl Alex and James left early, probably for rumpy pumpy. I smelt of Jack Daniels BBQ sauce all night and was really self conscious about it. Emma and I hung out with Amy (as mentioned earlier) and Freya (also mentioned earlier). I had a couple of drinks, even though I was scared of what mixing alcohol and antibiotics would do, and lived to tell the tale! Yaaay.

Home now. Sleepy.

Recently...

…I watched an episode of Chris Morris’s Jam after not having watched it in years. I’d forgotten just how delighfully nightmarish it is. I found myself actually disgusted, but entertainingly so, at some sketches. Some are actually disturbing, like the opening monologues. The one I saw was about a woman who took her dog for a walk and realised, after being confused by the kids in the park screaming, the dog was dead after she’d locked it in the shed for seven months. It’s terrifying stuff, but genius all the same. There’s a weird poetry to the monologues and Chris Morris makes up words and generally turns the entire show into a horrific nightmare.

Speaking of Chris Morris, I watched the first episode of the IT crowd today. I’d watched it ages ago, but wasn’t all that impressed really. I did genuinely laugh a lot at Chris Morris though, especially when he’s trying to use his computer through voice recognition:

‘Hello… Hello, Computer.’

A revelation struck me today. Your tonsils are the bits at the side of your throat!! I honestly believed, for the past 20 years, that the dangly bit at the back of my throat was my tonsils. I managed to ignore the fact that ‘tonsils’ implies plurar, and in my current state of tonsillitis everything at the back of my throat seemed to be going red and swollen APART from the dangly bit, the uvula, I now know it to be called. Dopey old me.

I like realising things like that. Or things that are blindingly obvious.

For example, Tails, the character out of Sonic. His real name is ‘Miles Prower’ and it took me up until now to realise it’s meant to be like miles per hour. Doi.

On a similar note, during Dark Knight (which I should get on saturday!), Lucius Fox talks about sonar and Bruce Wayne says ‘Sonar, like a…’ and Fox cuts him off and says ‘Like a submarine, yes.’ That one took me a good couple of hours, until Tim had to actually say to me ‘SONAR LIKE A BAT LIKE BATMAN’.

Another really odd one is the Disney logo. I’m going to post a picture of it.

This always confused me as a kid. The D always registered in my mind as some kind of backwards G, despite the COMPANY BEING CALLED DISNEY. It literally took my third visit to a disneyland in march this year to look at it the correct way. Fucking hell.

Anyway, I’m a doofus.

Who'd have thought?

I had an awesome lecture today. That’s right. It was awesome.

Poetry Theory and Practice on a tuesday afternoon can often be hit and miss. Lectures alternate between two lecturers: David Herd and Jan Montifiore. David Herd looks like Edgar Wright with shorter hair and no glasses while Jan Montifiore looks like an advert for a charity shop. Jan rambles, drops unfunny jokes and ends up talking about her poetry about her dead family, sending everyone out of the lecture confused and depressed, while David gets to the point, makes funny jokes and leaves everyone wanting more. Much like myself in bed.

Anyway, today’s lecture was about speed poetry. Focussing on the poet Frank O’Hara and how he wrote poetry in the moment and without any sense of the self, as an intimate conversation between two people. The fact that I can say that off the top of my head is a miracle; normally after lectures, if I was asked what it was about, I’d probably reply ‘books n shit’. But the lecture was so to the point and interesting that I didn’t want to miss anything and when it finished, everyone I chatted to agreed that they would probably do their upcoming essay on it.

If the government wants to improve the education system, all they need to do is clone David Herd a few thousand times, train them in different things and have them teach in every school. Sorted.

Throat still hurts. I missed my 9am lecture and seminar and slept in till 1, only briefly waking up somewhere in between to pop some pills.

We had a few house viewings today. The first one we saw was nice and cosy, but with big bedrooms and a nice living room. We all agreed we should get that one, but went to a couple of other viewings anyway. The other houses were nice and spacious, although kind of too spacious. Gigantic floor spaces, and something about the rooms seemed a bit…groggy. The decor was all old fashioned and weird as well. Not to mention the rooms where the beds consisted of a matress on top of a cabinet.

Heroes and Prison Break were good today. Prison break is becoming a bit drawn out now though in that one thing seems to be solved, then another problem comes along, then another…arrgghh it never ends. I really think this should be the last series. Heroes however, is getting right into the swing of things. Shame this ‘volume’ ends soon. Maybe next week…

Day off tomorrow. Yarp. Hopefully I’ll feel better, but either way I’ll probably spend it doing the online quizzes that count towards 30% of one of my modules.

Night y’all

I have half an hour...

…until my next dose of pills. I don’t want to do work, so I decided to do this :)

I put on my iPod as well while I write. At the moment it’s on Pogo by Digitalism. Tune.

So I’m ill. I spent most of my day at Sabi’s in Tyler court. She studies film and has to make a film and asked me to be in it. It’s basically about a couple who have split up but still have feelings for each other, I think. Today we filmed lots of flashback scenes where we have good times (Sabi slipped over in the mud during one of these scenes) and bad times, like arguments and me forgetting her birthday. Good fun though.

Readymade by Beck is now on. I like this song, it’s a bit weird, but chilled out. Beck’s probably my favourite singer at the moment (apart from the ever awesome NIN). I got most of his albums and had a massive session and stilll keep discovering awesome songs that I’ve never heard before. I’d love to see him live. Even if he is a scientologist. But then Tom Cruise is like King Scientologist and if you’ve seen Tropic Thunder, you’ll be reassured just how awesome he is.

Ahh D.A.N.C.E. by Justice. So happy and dancy. I was quite ashamed the other day when Matt Horne played this in the venue and Emma recognised it before me, despite the fact that I always go MENTAL when it’s played in the venue. There are so many different mixes of it though, they always seem to play a different one. They should play a different Justice song, like Genesis, that’s probably my favourite song off Cross. Tthhee Ppaarrttyy or DVNO would also be good, I think.

Everyone was trying to pursuade me to go to the pub, but I just feel like relaxing. Plus with the amount of pills I’ve taken, I think I’d drop dead at the scent of alcohol. James and Alex seem to be proper fully fledged alcoholics now. They both told me the alcohol would do me good, which strikes me as a bit of a 1950’s attitude. I told them about my medication and they told me not to bother with it. Alex’s argument for this was that she had tonsillitis and didn’t bother with medicine and it kept coming back. Then she got Laryngitis. Then she got Pneumonia. I have no idea what the logic behind her argument was there.

We Dance Alone by Beck (again). I particularly like this album: The Information; Beck’s 2007 album. It’s pretty electronic, which is exactly what presses my musical buttons.

I have lectures and seminars at 9am tomorrow. I’m not going to go though, tonsillitis is plenty a good enough excuse. Plus I haven’t read the stuff for my seminar and I hate sitting there like a lemon when the seminar leader keeps looking at you for a contribution and you either look at the text quickly in a kind of ‘ahh I remember reading this…’ or you look into the distance with a look of ‘argh I know the answer, but I can’t think how to phrase it’. That’s what I do anyway.

Tonsils!

Urgh. It’s been confirmed. I have tonsillitis. I thought it was just a throat infection, but then last night, the pus! I went to the medical centre this morning and she looked at my throat and immediately went ‘ahhh yep’ and prescribed me some penicillin. Now I’m popping 6 pills every 4 hours. GAY!

Damn you Anna! But it’s worth it, really :)
