I’m trying to curb my excitement for The Avengers out of worry that it might end up being… *gulp*… crap?
I don’t genuinely think it will be crap, I just think it could be, and high expectations could be a bad thing.
I’m sick to the teeth of action films, in particular superhero action films. They’re all very samey now, and whilst The Avengers looks great from the trailers, who knows that it won’t just be the same thing again?
Action films in general have been so formulaic and dull recently. The last straw for me was In Time starring Justin Timberlake. The film started off with some interesting ideas and potential themes that could have been played with, like the value of time and life, and the divide between the rich and the poor. After half an hour, these themes were abandoned for gun fights and car chases that had nothing interesting about them at all.
Superhero films used to be lots of fun, like the nineties Batman films, and the Spiderman trilogy. Now they’re churned out under the same formula, and they don’t seem to have had any uniqueness injected into them at all.
There’s not necessarily anything wrong with films that have no particular depth beyond action; action films are easy and fun to watch. It’s just the frequency at which they’re being released now which is making them seem much more monotonous.
Thor and Captain America fell under this category for me. I felt like the ‘origin’ stories were necessary for The Avengers, but those were contained into the first third of the films. After that, they had action scenes for the sake of it and forgettable relationships between characters.
The fact that I didn’t like either of these films does not bode well for The Avengers. I thought Iron Man 2 was hit and miss as well.
I’m not saying The Avengers will be a bad film, I’m just worried there will be nothing different about it, I’ll be bored and a voice inside me will say ‘What did you expect?’. I hope Joss Whedon as the captain of the ship will inject a bit of life into a dead genre. It may well be an awesome film that shuts me up, but either way, I hope 2012 signals the end of superhero films for a bit.
