Attack the Block

I saw Joe Cornish’s hoody-alien-comedy, Attack the Block, back when it was in cinemas and thought it was great. I was a little disappointed at first, as I thought it was going to be more of a gag-fest, like Shaun of the Dead. But when I’d come around to the fact that the humour was more subtle and focussed on the quick, clever dialogue, I really enjoyed it.

Something I’ve learnt whilst working at Blockbuster is that there is no film that everybody loves. Everyone has a different opinion. I generally dislike big blockbusters laden with CGI and prefer little known quirky comedies, which means that when a customer asks me for a recommendation, I either have to lie and chat about how great some mindless CGI film is, or make a genuine recommendation which they may think is too slow and doesn’t have enough explosions.

However, despite me knowing how different opinions can be, I’m so shocked at the response to Attack the Block since it came out on DVD last month. I’ve barely heard one good word about it from any customers or colleagues. And these reviews aren’t just ‘meh, it was ok’s, but more violent dislike for it! One woman brought it back to be checked in and made a point of saying ‘That is the worst film I’ve ever seen.’ All of my colleagues have berated me for ever saying that it was good, and one refused to speak to me after I recommended it to him and ‘wasted his evening’.

I can understand that it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, as no film ever is, but I can’t understand why everyone hates it so much! It’s not that bad, surely? Am I biased because I love Adam and Joe so much? Did anybody else like/hate it?
